What would be the best type of electronic valve release setup for use on a pneumatic cannon?
We would like to begin building a high-psi pneumatic air cannon for tennis ball launching. Because of the high psi levels (>500psi), we would like to have a remote connected by wire to activate the burst valve. We will also be pressurizing by remote line feed as well so we are at a safe distance in case of rupture.
What type of valve should I look for at the hardware store to do this with, and what sort of electronic means could actuate this valve effectively on 12v power?
I saw one of these on TV last week. The guy claimed 4000 psi (but I doubt it). He used ordinary lawn-sprinkler valves — two of them in parallel (for a higher rate of air flow). If he is claiming 4000 psi (probably more like 400), then they should work, plus they’re only about US$15 each.
I was thinking about building one of those, myself, after seeing that guy’s design.
When I was a kid, another older kid in the neighborhood built a tennis-ball cannon out of brass pipe fittings, aluminum cans, soup cans, and duct tape. It used lighter fluid and a flint in the brass pipe breech. It was pretty cool.
